Focus of the Curriculum

CCPA conducts an internal academic review or needs assessment annually. The purpose of this process is to measure the outcomes according to the school mission, goals and any new knowledge obtained of student needs. The school curriculum may change at any time in the school year according to needs that are identified or knowledge of improved resources or teaching methods are discovered.

Curriculum Resources

The Cincinnati College Preparatory Academy chooses its curriculum resources based on

current student needs and/or newly identified teaching methods. The following explains

 what resources are currently used but is not limited to this list and is subject to change

 Evidence/Research of Viability of Curriculum

A Beka

The A Beka approach is to keep education lively, interesting and memorable. The materials reflect sensible theory that is firmly anchored to practicality. A Beka materials have been developed as a result of 50 years of actual classroom experience.

StoryTown

StoryTown is filled with a variety of fiction and nonfiction literature. Fiction offerings include

 narratives, poems, plays, and fantasy while nonfiction features contemporary news articles,

biographies, research material, and more. The program authors have included a robust

vocabulary that helps to create a rich learning environment through carefully selected words.

 

Scholastic Guided Reading

Scholastic Guided Reading Programs support a comprehensive reading program by integrating guided instruction, assessment, and independent practice into the classroom. The program enhances students' knowledge in Science, Social Studies, and Mathematics and builds reading skills, essential vocabulary, background knowledge, and develops strategic reading skills.

Zaner Blosser Strategies for Writers

A proven-effective, research-based program that powers the writing process and provides students with the tools for developing lifelong skills and success in all areas of writing. The program correlates to state standards , integrates six traits of effective writing , incorporates rubric-based instruction, contains flexible units and provides test-writing practice.

FOSS Science

The FOSS program is designed in units to include texts and hands-on activities that aid students in reaching high levels of mastery with science concepts and standards. The program materials are designed to meet the challenge of providing meaningful science education for all students in diverse American classrooms and to prepare them for life in the 21st century. The FOSS program was created to engage students in these processes as they explore the natural world.


History Alive

Lessons and activities are based on five well-established theories: Understanding by Design, Nonlinguistic Representation, Multiple Intelligences, Cooperative Interaction, and Spiral Curriculum. Dynamic lessons build mastery of state and national social studies standards and integrate hands-on active learning, achieving a consistent pattern of high quality social studies instruction while being mindful of standards.

Essential Skills

Essential skills is a computer program that is designed to increase reading skills and interest readers through fun and engaging activities. The program also offers measurable academic results, alignment to curriculum standards and learning benchmarks, activities designed for auditory, visual, and tactile learners.

Brainpop

Brainpop creates animated, curriculum-based content that engages students and bolsters achievement. Brainpop is used in numerous ways, from introducing a new lesson or topic to illustrating complex subject matter to reviewing before a test; content is aligned to academic standards.

Education City

This program provides inspiring and engaging educational games in the form of online activities for kids. The website's resources, activities and games cover the core subjects of Language Arts, Math, Science and Spanish Math.

IXL Math

IXL's math skills are aligned to the Common Core State Standards and the Ohio Academic Content Standards, providing comprehensive preparation for the Ohio Achievement Assessment. IXL also automatically tracks student progress and displays proficiency scores in the state standards reports.
